My FIRST Robotics experience

Last week, I went to Robotics Competition in which the high school students, ranging from 8th grade to 12th grade were participating. It was a nice experience to see how productive these kids are in exercising their creativeness. My son, who is a 10th grader, has been part of a robotics club of his school. I was watching them in the competition hall and happy to see them engaged in a good work rather than slogging around in some junk stuffs.

The kids were engaging themselves in brain storming whenever something goes wrong. They field their robots and control them through wired or wireless, mostly wireless, controls. One of the team member maneuvers the robot to demonstrate its capabilities. Generally, there will be two teams competing against each other. The judge panel, randomly picked from the other teams, watches the moves and skills and awards scores. The scoring and evaluation procedures are stipulated by FIRST (FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit organization that promotes these science and technological events.

I know all these boys had lot to study for their next day class. Although they were running out of time, they were still patient and doing their job pretty good. Everyone in the team is really great, in the sense; these kids spend their time very productively. Hats off to them!

Not only the children - the parents and elders too were very enthusiastic and showing a great amount involvement. Right from transporting the students and robots, hosting and organizing the events and judging the robots and the teams, and many more responsibilities were shouldered by them.

When I visited India last time, I saw some cricket clubs organizing neatly in a professional manner. Are there any such clubs in academic lines too, such as technology and science clubs or Math Olympics or Music and entertainment clubs? Please write about them and educate us.

Are there any events or chain of events conducted in these lines in any part of India?

Can we, in India, also start seeing these kinds of private non-profit organizations’?

I wish I see the parallels in India nowadays. I might not have seen during my childhood days.

Products of the week - Creative - Zen X-Fi2 MP3Player

Creative - Zen X-Fi2 MP3Player

It seems hard to imagine a world where there are any other MP3 players of note aside from the unavoidable iPods and yet it wasn't that long ago that Creative's Zen range made a big stir (especially with the first Zen X-Fi) because of the generally superior quality of its sound reproduction.

The Zen X-Fi2 has been designed as a significant upgrade and improvement on the original model whilst trying to match the current enthusiasm for all things touch screen. The X-Fi2 is almost unrecognisable from its predecessor as it's a lot thinner and longer (102 x 57 x 11.6mm), weighs marginally more (75g) and now boasts a 3.0-inch TFT touch screen LCD, with 262,000 colours and a 400 x 240-pixel resolution.

Also, the array of control buttons on the front has largely been dispensed with, leaving just a Menu button and a speaker. The earphone socket and the USB port are still in the same place on the side but the on/off button is now on the top alongside the mini SD slot. There are three different storage sizes available, ranging from 8GB (like the original model), through 16GB (which we're reviewing here) to a chunky 32GB.

SANYO Announces the World’s Smallest, Lightest, and Thinnest Dual Camera Xacti for 2010

SANYO just announced the release of a new Full HD, Slim Type Dual Camera Xacti, VPC-CS1, available in February, 2010.

The Dual Camera series aims to provide customers with more enjoyable video experiences, by offering cameras that allow users to easily capture both photos and videos in daily life, rather than devices that are merely used to record important events. By utilizing a convenient video format that can be easily handled on PC and Internet environments, and even on home TVs, these cameras are more than just hardware for capturing, viewing, and saving images. They are convenient products for sharing videos online, on blogs or on other multi-media sites, and they are able to easily import images to portable media devices. The VPC-CS1 is undergoing certification to be compatible with iFrame, a next generation video format that has been designed to allow users to easily import, edit and share high quality video. SANYO is offering new ways to enjoy images after they are captured, and the Dual Cameras have been well received by consumers all over the world.

Now, SANYO has introduced a new model with a much greater degree of portability in a compact, lightweight and slim design, in order to expand the use of Full HD cameras. It is a new style of video camera that can record events and occasions as well as capture unforgettable scenes or single frames from daily life in Full HD, just as easily as taking a snapshot.

    Main Features
    1. New style of Dual Camera with the world’s smallest, lightest and thinnest super-slim*1 body
    • Product development for the series has been carried out with anemphasis on a compact design that can be taken anywhere and anytime, using the concept of a handy device for recording the moments of daily life.
    • In order to make the new models even more compact than previousmodels, SANYO has developed a slim sensor module and a new super slim lens.
    • With its compact size (approx. 126 cc in volume), lightweight design(approx. 5 oz), and slim body (1.06” in thickness) for superior portability, the VPC-CS1 is a new style of video camera that will radically expand the situations where it can be used.
    • The original vertical ergonomic style enables slim body with usability*3

    2. Easily captures beautiful Full HD*2 videos
    • Not only it features a super slim and compact body, but also the VPC-CS1 can capture Full HD videos with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
    • The video format used for this model is “MPEG-4 AVC / H.264,” which is easy to use on PC and Internet environments, as it is a single file format, similar to the one used for still photos.
“MPEG-4 AVC / H.264” is fully supported by the latest Windows® OS, “Windows 7”*4, which was launched in October 2009.
    • Consequently, video files are displayed in the same thumbnail format as still picture files, and they can also be played back directly with Windows Media Player, and editable with Windows Live Movie Maker*5, and are Device Stage compatible. This makes the files even more convenient for use on computers.

To enhance its versatility, the VPC-CS1 is undergoing official certification to support iFrame*, a next generation video format that has been designed to allow users to easily import, edit and share high quality video. This format enables the camcorder function to record in the same format used for editing on a computer, dramatically speeding up the processes of importing, editing and sharing movies across multiple platforms and devices.
iFrame is a computer-friendly format, and can be used with both Mac and PC compatible applications due to the use of standards-based technologies such as H.264, AAC, and MP4.
When combined with iMovie* in this capture mode, it is possible to realize even greater convenience in the procedure of capturing, uploading to a computer, editing, and sharing.

    3. “Sound Zoom” function enables clear sound recordings according to the scene
Sound is an important element for increasing the realism of videos. The VPC-CS1 has three microphone modes for recording clear sounds according to the scene and purpose.
    1. Wide Mode: Stereo recording with high channel separation.
    2. Gun Microphone Mode: Recording that focuses on sound emanating from the direction that the camera is pointing, while reducing sounds from other directions.

Not to mention that it will boast appealing instant messaging features, along with support for social networking sites and FM radio capabilities.

Moreover, the Samsung B5722 also includes a tracking software solution that will enable users to find the handset in case it is stolen or lost, and which has been updated so as to track the device within the radius of a few miles, it seems. For a good bargain online - The Hindu Bussiness Line

Online shopping need not rob you of those attractive deals on bulk purchases. Web sites now allow you to become part of a group with exactly that in mind......

How many times have you teamed up with friends to shop at the local bazaar, buying in bulk and bargaining for a good discount? Or even better, bought 50 copies of a bestseller for all your classmates who were keen on owning one, and ended up with a great deal or even a gift voucher!

The ‘bulk buying' concept has now gone online thanks to new ventures launched by retail enthusiasts and the power of social networking. Web sites now allow online shoppers to indulge in group buying by identifying like-minded shoppers on the site. They can click and choose the products of their choice and avail themselves of discounts of up to 80 per cent.

Such group-based social e-commerce buying services appear to be touching off a new shopping trend in the country.

    Tapping the ‘spirit of bargaining'

These Web sites have developed simple yet innovative models that target the shopper's inherent desire to look out for good deals.

While each Web site follows its own format, such shopping is geared to forming groups online with members of the Web site so as to get a great deal.

While MyDala displays its deals for the day, which require a minimum number of takers in 24 hours for all of them to avail themselves of the deal, others such as ShoppingReps allow consumers to be part of groups such as Dell Inspiron 15, where members who want to buy a laptop join the group for a bulk discount.

Though the majority of group-buying Web sites restrict themselves to online shopping, ShoppingReps goes a step ahead by allowing you to visit the store personally to buy the product you bargained for. They ‘collect quotations from randomly chosen group members for their respective groups. Each group has its own pool of quotes submitted by group members. The Web platform evaluates and picks the best quotes from the pools and serves them back to the respective groups.'

    The whole gamut

What makes it even better for shoppers is the number of products and services one can shop for in this format.

From gadgets to shoes, cars to washing machines, farm machines to language courses, beauty treatments to salsa classes, restaurant vouchers and lots more, one has plenty of options to choose from, depending on the Web site.

While this spells good news for buyers, for the product or service owners, known as ‘vendors' or ‘merchants,' the Web site serves as a good platform to ensure minimum sales.

Anisha Singh, Founder-CEO, mydala.com explains, “The local businesses we promote get tremendous visibility, paid customer footfalls, access to new customers and the site helps build their reach and loyalty.

We've seen incredible enthusiasm among our business partners. We are focused on bringing deals to our customers from local businesses that provide the best of what our cities have to offer: restaurants, spas, shopping, events and recreation.”

    Growing numbers

The response to this shopping format has been encouraging. Singh adds that since the site's launch in November 2009, it has sold 532 vouchers and helped its customers save Rs 2.4 lakh.

Udhayakumar Chinnayan of www.ShoppingReps.com says, “In the past 10 months, we have promoted the site on several marketing fronts. There are currently 1,700 registered users and they have raised around 250 purchase intentions. We have been able to form several groups and requested group members to submit the quotations collected from their local stores. More students are joining our band these days.”

While MyDala has seen a lot of takers for their restaurant, event and movie deals, ShoppingReps has seen increasing demand for discounted educational courses and bikes from the student community.

The service is set to be offered in other cities as well. The Delhi-based MyDala is launching in Mumbai and Bangalore early this year and other cities will follow. Udhayakumar of ShoppingReps hopes to expand to other cities in India, the US and European countries after trials in Chennai and other South Indian cities.

Haggling sure has gotten a makeover!
